The Stonewall National Museum & Archives held a conversation in October 2021 with the John Burton Harter Foundation about the life, art, and legacy as its namesake.
Hunter O’Hanian, SNMA Executive Director, spoke with Alan Williams, JBHF Advisor, and Lisa Rolfe, JBHF Registrar, in a video interview conducted between the SNMA offices in Fort Lauderdale and the site of JBHF’s collection of art work by Harter.
Participants discussed Harter’s life, artistic focus, and selected works, along with JBHF’s mission in action.
The topics opened a dialogue between the archival institution and the art foundation on mutual efforts to preserve and promote items of LGBTQ+ cultural and artistic significance.
Harter also practiced archival science throughout his career, including 17 years at the Louisiana State Museum, and in his meticulous organizing, record-keeping, and storing of his numerous paintings, drawings, photography, and ephemera.
